My daughter was hospitalized over Christmas break

My daughter was hospitalized over Christmas break and her condition was critical. Praise God she has since made a full recovery! Last week I shared the whole tale in my Instagram stories but I’m sure a lot of you missed it. So today I added it as a highlight if you’d like to check it out. It explains what our family went through and why I haven’t been as active on here over the last few months. Now that we’re past it and in a good place, I wanted to finally share the story. You can find it in the highlight titled Hospital.

I rang in 2023 in my daughter’s hospital room more than a thousand miles from home. We traveled to Texas to spend Christmas with godfamily and while here my daughter got extremely sick. She was hospitalized last Tuesday and we found out she has e-coli. It’s affected her kidney function to the point that she’s on dialysis and as of last night she needed a blood transfusion. Needless to say 2023 has not been my favorite so far.

But as I look back on 2022 I am grateful for all the blessings that came our way. We remodeled our entire bottom floor and were able to take several trips, including a 2 week European trip of a lifetime. I am grateful for the blessings and I’m hopeful that things will turn around in 2023.

When someone asks me how they can get started with

When someone asks me how they can get started with improving their finances I tell them it starts with mindset. Before any money is made, budgeted, moved around, saved, paid, or used to pay off debt, the mindset and motivation have to be solid. Otherwise none of that money stuff matters.

It’s not enough to just want to better your finances. You have to ask yourself WHY! You have to make goals for yourself and your family. Picture your dream life. What does it look, sound, and smell like? What would it feel like if it became a reality?

This is what you need to focus on before starting the process and throughout the entire process. Otherwise you’ll cave at the first true test of your new frugal way of life, and many others after that.

If your mindset and motivation are rock solid in your mind then as life throws temptations your way you can ask yourself...

“Do I really want that designer handbag 👜 or do I want to be able to stay home with my kids someday?” 👦🏻🧒🏻

“Do I really need the latest iPhone📱 or do I want to retire early?” 📆

“Do I want that Starbucks ☕️ or do I want to go on vacation next year?”🏝

One of the most important things you can do once you decide to pay off your debt once and for all is to stop using credit cards. Like right now! Quit cold turkey! Cut them up or put them in water and freeze them... whatever you have to do. But please stop using them!

If you have an emergency and don’t have enough cash to cover it, get creative. Find a way to make extra money or borrow it from a family member or friend. But don’t charge it to your credit card where it will accrue interest. Adding to your debt while trying to pay off debt is like trying to fill a leaky bucket. It just won’t ever work.

If you’ve made it your goal to pay off debt then make a commitment today to stop using your credit cards once and for all. I promise you’ll thank yourself later!

A couple of weeks ago I was traveling with my fami

A couple of weeks ago I was traveling with my family and our flights got delayed resulting in us getting home almost 8 hours later than planned. It was due to bad weather in the city where we had our connecting flight. I contacted the airline through their website’s chat feature and asked if there was anything they could do to change our flights and they said there were no alternate flights available. I asked if they offered any sort of refund or credit and they said I’d have to call their customer service number.

So last week I finally called them back and waited on hold for nearly 2 hours. When I explained the situation they told me they would send me a $100 voucher for each ticket! I made $300 for placing that call and waiting those 2 hours and it was so worth it!

There are some who feel uncomfortable asking for things like this or who don’t think it will work or isn’t worth their time. But why not at least try? And you don’t have to be angry or rude when you make this kind of call. I was very polite and told the customer service rep that I understood the issue was due to weather which is beyond their control, but was just wondering if there was anything they could do to make up for the inconvenience. No arguing necessary! I got the vouchers just for making the call and asking.

We’re going to Arizona for a wedding this fall and those vouchers will hopefully cover a good portion of the flight expense!

It never hurts to ask! The worst they can say is no. Next time you’re inconvenienced by a business, try calling them and see what they’re willing to do for you!

We unexpectedly got a $1,000 bill from the IRS this week. I guess after we filed our taxes and they saw how much our income was last year they decided we didn’t really need that child tax credit they gave us after all.

It’s bad timing because we’re currently using any extra funds we have to pay for our bottom floor remodel, and now we’ll have $1K less this month than we planned. But we’ll be okay. It’s more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Here’s the moral of my story. Never trust that free money from the government is yours to keep. Whether it’s a tax credit, a stimulus check, or anything else. They can send you a bill and have you pay it back just as easily as they gave it to you.

My husband and I used to get a tax refund every year and until a few years ago we thought it was a good thing. But tax refunds are actually not a good thing. Why? Because it means you paid too much to the government throughout the year and now they’re paying you back. That’s YOUR money they’ve been holding onto, using, making interest off of. You could have been taking home extra money each month and using it to pay down debt or build up your savings. Instead you gave it to them to hold onto until tax time.

How can you avoid tax refunds in the future? One way is to ask your employer to give you a new W-4 tax form to fill out. A W-4 tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold from your paycheck. You can make changes in the Other Adjustments section to have less tax withheld from your paychecks.

Hope you all have a wonderful new year and may it be better than 2021! The past year has treated us well, all things considering.

Our big goal for last year was to save up enough money to pay for a bottom floor remodel. We surpassed our savings goal and the remodel is starting later this month!

When you’ve spent so long saving money toward a goal if it feels so good (and also a little weird) to start spending the money once you’ve achieved the goal!

Our goal for 2022 is to keep saving and investing. What’s your financial goal for 2022?

Bad habits can lead to good ones if you learn from your mistakes and make a conscious effort to correct them!

My mistake - not tracking my expenses throughout the month. I didn’t realize how much we were overspending.

My correction - this month the goal is no eating out more than twice a week. Plus, I’m only budgeting $250 instead of $300 to help offset some of last month’s costs.

We all make mistakes, and it does no good to beat ourselves up over it. Learn from your mistakes and change those bad habits into good ones!

I've been taking a weight lifting class on Monday mornings at my gym and I try to make it my goal to increase the weight I'm lifting each week. Last week I was struggling and the coach told me I was lifting too much weight. I got discouraged because I felt like if I'm not increasing my weight then I'm not making progress. But he told me l will still gain strength by lifting less weight and doing more reps.

It got me thinking... that same concept can apply to finances. Sometimes we feel like we have to make these huge money moves in order to make any progress. But it's actually the small and consistent things we do that make the biggest difference. You don't have to struggle to find huge sums of money to throw at your debt. Anytime you have a little extra, put it towards debt and little by little you'll see that balance go down.

Don't get discouraged. It's still progress!

The 2 hardest things I ever had to do in my life happened within a day of each other.

1. Watching my precious 6 year old son die of a sudden brain aneurysm.
2. Explaining to my daughter (his twin sister) the next morning that her brother had gone to heaven to be with Jesus.

Today marks 8 years since we lost Lukas Christian and let me tell you, it never gets easier. There is never a day we don’t think of him, miss him, wonder what he would be like as a teenager, what life would be like if he was still with us.

But the one thing we don’t do is worry about him. We know he’s safe in heaven with God, the saints, the angels, and our loved ones who have gone before him. And we know we will be reunited with him someday. It’s just that sometimes someday seems so so far way.

I know this account is about finances and I don’t often get too personal here. But I want to tell you that the whole point of financial freedom is so that you can live life on your terms… even when life throws your worst nightmare at you. I can’t imagine how much worst things would have been if we couldn’t afford our son’s funeral or if we couldn’t afford for me to cut my work hours to part-time after he died so that I could be at home with my daughter after school. With financial stability you have the freedom to make the right decisions for your family instead of being at the mercy of what you can and can’t afford.

I want you to chase after that freedom so that you can live your dream life. And I pray that you never live your worst nightmare like I did. Please treasure every moment you have with your loved ones - and especially your little ones. 👦🏻 👧🏻
